State Knowledge Management Center on Climate Change
Bihar is a landlocked state in Northern India and is located between Uttar Pradesh
(from the West), West Bengal (from the East), Nepal (from the North) and Jharkhand
(from the South). The river Ganges flows through Bihar, dividing the State in two
unequal halves. Bihar is the most densely populated state in India, with the majority
of its population dependent on agriculture. The State has shown foresight and recognized
the need of transition to a sustainable growth paradigm. Bihar is severely affected
with climate related disasters such as floods and droughts. Climate induced changes
in the rainfall pattern are likely to occur in the future, which may exacerbate
flooding and drought. North Bihar, for instance, has snow-fed perennial rivers and
rapid melting of snow will lead to flooding of these rivers which will also cause
soil erosion. Recognizing the climate change impacts across sectors, locations,
and populations will enable the adoption of diverse approaches necessary for adaptation
and mitigation to climate change. Therefore, the State Knowledge Management Center
on Climate Change is established in the Bihar with the following objectives:
- Conducting District Level Climate Vulnerability assessment of Bihar
- Supporting the Bihar’s State Action Plan on Climate Change
- Developing State Level Pathway to Climate Adaptive Development
- Preparation of sector-wise district level development pathway which includes climate
change adaptation
- Conservation and sustainable use of wetlands
- Dissemination of Knowledge on Climate Change
